Nian Gao (Chinese New Year Cake)

  • 100 g glutinous rice flour
  • 50 g tapioca starch
  • 50 g rice flour
  • 200 ml of water
  • 200 g brown sugar, shredded
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 pandan leaf
  1. Prepare a pot, add water, brown sugar, pandan leaf, and salt bring it to boil.
  2. Boil all the ingredients until mixed evenly and fully cooked.
  3. Turn off the heat, strain the ingredients and let it cool for awhile.
  4. In a separate mixing bowl, combine glutinous rice flour, tapioca starch, and rice flour.
  5. Slowly add in the sugar water mixture, stir using a whisk. 
  6. Prepare a cake pan, then grease the cake pan using oil. Pour the batter evenly.
  7. Steam the batter for about three hours.
  8. Once cooked, remove from the oven and let it cool.
  9. Put the cakes in the serving plate.
